MSE: HDR (High Dynamic Range) Lecture
http://www.meetup.com/SeattleFlickr/calendar/10885913/
Sat Sep 26 14:00:00 PDT 2009
Redmond Regional Library

When: Sept 26th, 2:30 - 5:00 PM Where: Redmond Regional Library, Meeting room #1 Prerequisites A solid understanding of exposure, and how to set exposure on a camera. What to bring * An open mind * Ideally, a laptop to follow along on the technical exercise. Thumbdrives with sample images, trial version of Photomatix, as well as the installer for PictureNaut, will be make available for people to follow along. * Optional: A graphing or scientific calculator that can compute exponents and logarithms. HDR is a very technical topic and, at one extreme, there have been numerous PhD dissertations and Siggraph white papers written on various branches of the topic. We will try to present this from a layman's perspective, but we also won't be doing the topic justice without a good solid primer on the background theory. The first 5-10 minutes of the lecture will have some math to it, audience is encouraged to have with them a scientific or graphing calculator to follow along. The math used will be advanced middle school / early high school level - some multiplication and divisions with base 2 logs and exponents. We understand that the thought of doing math with photography has unpleasant effects on some people and will also provide a pre-computed / pre-tabulated "cheat sheet' for those who don't want to follow along with the math. Lecture Outline: Technical Basics: * Defining the terms: Exposure Value, Dynamic Range, Bit Depth, Gamma * What is Dynamic Range and why is it important? * The human eye as a camera * What is HDR? * Why HDR? High Dynamic Range Workflow * Image Capture / Data Generation * Manipulations in 32 bit world * Tone mapping * Analogy: RAW vs JPG * Analogy: Slide film vs print; dodging and burning Capturing HDR images: * Camera settings (and why we set 'em that way) * Histogram is your friend * Calculating EV spans * Capturing the full EV span * HDR generation, tricks of the trade HDR Presentation - Visualizing HDR data in a LDR world. * Tone Mapping - where the rubber hits the road. o Black & White Point o Microcontrast & light smoothing * Common / popular tone mappers o Detail Enchancer o Tone compresser o Human Physological Model o Gamma The Secret Sauces - Creative HDR application * Artifact correction and image blending * Black and white photography * Flash techniques + HDR * HDR Panoramas Further Reading & Resources * Applications: PictureNaut & Photomatix * The HDRI handbook -- Thanks for reading, see you there! Southlake Grill

Back to Southlake Grill for our September B&V! This month's programming will be a slideshow and discussion of the Seattle Flickr Character Project: In the summer of 2008, the USA network hired twelve great professional photographers to create the USA Character Project, designed to show the human character of our country. Inpired by that, this summer we created a project of Seattle Flickr photographers to create the Seattle Character Project, pictures designed to show the human character of our city. A jury, headed by local photographer Chase Jarvis, will be selecting the 50 best pieces from the group pool, to be shown at this month's Brew & View meetup. Please contact Hank Graham (Flickr name: dionwrbear) with any questions about the project. For those who haven't been here before, we have a room to ourselves (upstairs, away from other customers who might be bothered by our flashes!) that comfortably holds our group, and has couches, tables, bar stools, and a pool table. We also have dedicated wait staff, and a wide menu of food and drinks to choose from. Parking is also pretty convenient in the area, and free after 6:00. Minors are welcome. And to top it all off, they have deep-fried burgers (note: The "deep fried double bacon cheese burger" is called the Crazy Top and it's not on the menu but you can order it!)... We hope to see you there! www.southlakegrill.com

If you would like to go to dinner please include that in your RSVP so the correct number of reservations can be made. From the Fremont Arts Council: On the heels of the joyful & exuberant 21st annual Summer Solstice Parade, the Fremont Arts Council will celebrate the autumnal equinox on September 22 with the beautiful, sweet, & illuminating 'Luminata' lantern parade around Green Lake Park in Seattle. Beginning at dusk at the Small Craft Center (located at the south end of the lake), a procession of hundreds will light up the night with handmade art lanterns carried both by hand and by boat. Everyone is invited to take part. Joining the Yahoo group is the best way to get informed about Luminata and a great first step for getting involved: Luminata-subscribe@yahoogroups.com The Fall equinox is a wonderful time for celebrating the change of seasons says last year's Luminata lead artist Leslie Zenz, Many traditions around the world recognize the last days of the productive summer are about to shift into the dark, introspective time of winter. Lanterns are a beautiful symbol of our spirit as a community that will sustain us through the cold months. The procession starts when it gets dark enough, going clockwise around the lake from the south to the north. MSE: North Sound Pub Night

Mon Sep 21 17:30:00 PDT 2009
McMenamins-Mill Creek

When: Monday, September 21st at 5:30 PM or when ever you get there Where: Mill Creek's McMenamins Pub www.mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=30 Why: We like conversation with our beer Come on out and join some North Sound Flickr folks for beer and light conversation. You don't have to live in the North Sound, just like beer (or other libations) and conversation. This month we're going to check out the McMenamins Pub in Mill Creek. I think the location is a little tricky to find if you're not familiar with the area - I know it is for me. It's about a mile or two north of the Mill Creek Town Center on the Bothell-Everett Hwy. Just south of 132nd SE. If I remember correctly, happy hour ends at 6:00. It's a bit further for me to drive, so I probably wont be there until closer to 6:00 with the sign. Meeting time is 5:30ish till the last Flickr folk leave. If you don't see a Flickr sign, don't give up, ask a folk or two if they're with the Flickr group. We don't want to miss you! September Photostroll: Old Rainier Brewery/Tully's Building
http://www.meetup.com/SeattleFlickr/calendar/11399790/
Sat Sep 19 13:00:00 PDT 2009
Old Rainier Brewery

The forecast is for rain, so this seems like a good weekend to check out a landmark in Seattle history and tour the Old Rainier Brewery (most recently the home of Tully's Coffee), which is currently undergoing a renovation as retail and artist studio/residences. For decades, the building -- visible from Interstate -- was known for its giant, red, rotating "R". Beer was brewed in the location since 1934, and for years, Rainier Beer was an icon of Seattle's local beers (read more about the history of Rainier Beer). We're going to meet at the courtyard at 1 p.m., and be shown around the facility by the property manager. We'll meet at Macrina Bakery for lunch/brunch around 11, and head up to the brewery around 12:45 1943 First Avenue South Seattle, WA 98127 (206) 623-0919 www.macrinabakery.com
